Brake Press - Press Brake - CNC Hydraulic Press Brake

When choosing a Brake Press, either for accurate sheet metal work, or a Press Brake for the heavier duty fabrication work,
there are a variety of factors that will influence your selection of a Press Brake, such as  :

Press Brake - Brake Press - CNC Hydraulic Press Brake

Press Brake Axis

Whilst the Torsion Bar Press Brake and the Synchronized Brake Press have the same designated axis & auxillary functions, the construction of a Torsion Bar Press Brake reduces the possibility of controlling some of the axis, auxillary functions through a NC or CNC control unit, where as a Synchronised Brake Press is completly the opposite,  all axis and auxillary functions are available to be controlled with a CNC control.

The photo to the RH side shows the :

Standard 8 axis available on a Press Brake.

Auxillary functions are the :

Crowning table,
Front moveable tilting sheet supports, specific to Synchro Press brakes only

Synchronised Press Brake

The standard 8 axis are : Y1+Y2 , X1+X2, R1+R2, Z1+Z2,  plus powered CNC controlled table crowning, tilting front material supports.

Torsion Brake Press

The standard 6 axis are : Y1 , X1, R1+R2, Z1+Z2,  plus manual CNC controlled table crowning, tilting front material supports are not available

 Axis Speeds :

  • Synchro - Hydraulic Press Brake  - RICO & FPL
    [Y1+Y2] at 200mm/sec - [X] at 500mm/sec

  • Torsion Bar - Hydraulic Brake Press - TECHNA-FAB
    [Y] at 50mm/sec - [X] at 14mm/sec

Deflection / Crowning tables :

Function, to offset deflection created to top and bottom Press Brake beams during bending cycle.

If the only requirement was to fold one thickness at one consistent material length, then one crowning deflection setting of  the Press Brake top Press Brake tooling is all that would be required, however in practise the requirement to fold differing material thickness over differing material lengths, is more likely, thus the requirment for differing crowning deflection settings.

There are basically 2 types of crowning / deflection systems used on Brake Press.

1) A separate unit fitted onto the Brake Press table, this is the most common approach for Torsion and Synchro Press brakes.

2) Hydraulic cylinders built into the lower beam of the Brake Press, with deflection sensors fitted into the top beam of the Press Brake, this system is only used with a top end specification Synchro CNC Brake Press.

  • A Torsion bar Brake Press will offer the choice of a table mounted unit only, with manual or CNC control of the crowning deflection system.

    where as a :
  • Synchro CNC Brake Press might offer a table mounted crowning deflection system, or a system built into the Press Brake lower beam, both systems controlled via the Hydraulic Brake Press CNC controller.

  • Note* Press Brakes with the [Y] axis cylinders mounted on the machine end frames create more deflection than a Brake Press with the [Y] axis cylinders mounted inside the end frames.

Type of work : Sheet Metal.

The Synchro CNC controlled brake press  design / specification differs significantly to that of a Torsion bar Brake Press. The Synchro Press Brake, is a faster more precise machine that specifically suit's sheet metal work.

  • Accuracy, with a Synchro CNC Press Brake, position of the bending beam and backgauge are not determined by mechanical gearboxes, but by linear encoders that measure the actual position.
CNC Brake Press offers positional accuracy of 0.01mm.
  • CNC control, with a choice of multi axis, graphical screen.
    Axis available with a Synchro Hydraulic Press Brake are : [Y1+Y2] - [X1+X2] - [Z1+Z2] - [R1+R2].
Fast positioning of the [Y] & [X] axis.
Auxillary functions, Anti deflection crowning table front material systems operated thru the CNC.

    Type of work: Fabrication.
  • The Torsion Bar Press Brake specification / design differs significantly from the Synchro Brake Press.
  • Accuracy with a Torsion bar Press Brake is less, simply because the axis position is determined by mechanical gearboxes, fitted with encoders. Any inaccuracy with the gearbox translates to a positional inaccuracy in the Brake Press bending beam or backgauge.
  • Torsion bar Press Brake offers positional accuracy of  0.10mm.
  • CNC controls are available, but generally offering only 3 axis.
The Torsion bar Brake Press offers slower positioning of the [Y] & [X] axis, but this is not always a disadvantage, as fabricators are generally handling bigger heavier plates that might not be re positioned quickly.
Anti deflection systems will be manually adjustable.
  • Axis Available with a Torsion Hydraulic Press Brake are : [Y] - [X]  [R] with [Z1+Z2] available
    but manually operated.
  • Fast positioning of the [Y] & [X] axis.

Operator guarding : The Infra Red System, the standard basic installation for Press Brakes will creat problems if the front sheet support bracket heights are required to be changed, With Infra Red guarding, Operator(s) cannot stand close up to to the Press Brakes bending beam.

The LASER beam guarding system is not effected by any change of the positional setting of the sheet supports. Laser guarding offers the advantage of the operator(s) being able to work right up against the Press Brakes bending beam.

Preference : For country of manufacture, European, Turkish, Chinese.

  • Europe : We represent RICO
  • Turkey  : We represent DURMAZLAR
  • China    : We represent 2 manufacturers, we market a
Chinese Torsion bar Brake Press & a Synchro Press Brake underthe name TECHNA-FAB
  •
  • Price : infuenced by the Press Brake specification ie, number of axis, speed of axis movement, deflection tables, style of operator guarding, build quality, specification of electrical - hydraulic components used
  •
  • Finally : What machine function training will you receive, what back up can you expect if problems arise.
